Low-prep colouring ideas for a rainy afternoon at home, including a colour hunt, an animal story, and a little gallery. Start with one idea, follow your child’s interests, and leave room for their own choices.
Make a small rainy-day activity tray
A rainy afternoon does not need an elaborate craft plan. Gather a colouring book, a few coloured pencils, and a spare sheet of paper. Put them on a tray or a cleared table where your child can sit comfortably. These ideas work separately; you do not need to complete them in order. Choose one that suits the time and energy you have today.
Find three colours around the room
Invite your child to look for three colours in objects nearby, such as a cushion, a toy, or a book cover. Bring those colours back to the page. They can make an imaginary animal or use the colours only in the background. If searching the room interrupts the activity, choose three objects together at the table instead. Keep the choices open rather than judging a realistic result.
Give a baby animal a rainy-day story
Ask where the animal in the picture might shelter in an imaginary storm. Add a broad cloud, a little shelter, or a puddle on a separate sheet. Let your child name the scene. A grown-up can write the title if requested. Distinguish a pretend story from animal facts: if a real wildlife question comes up, check a reliable reference together later.
Create a two-picture gallery
Display a current page beside an earlier favourite. Ask your child what they would like visitors to notice in each one. You can use removable clips or simply prop the pages on a shelf. There is no need to compare neatness or decide which picture is better. Change the display when your child feels like sharing a new page.
